The project aims to contribute to territorial planning processes and development in post-conflict regions. This is done with great consideration for the protection and sustainable use of natural resources, as well as integrating the needs of the population most affected by the conflict.
Colombia is one of the 17 ‘megadiverse’ countries, which collectively, are the home to more than two-thirds of the world's biodiversity. Colombia is also a country that has experienced an internal armed conflict for many years. Over the last 60 years, the most forested and biodiverse regions in Colombia have been particularly affected by this conflict. Civil society has been the main victim of violence and displacement. Particularly affecting women, children and minorities such as indigenous communities and Afro-Colombians. The territories affected by the conflict are characterized by illegal land use practices and deforestation.
In 2016 the historic Peace Agreement between the Colombian Government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) was signed. The first point of this agreement established a comprehensive Rural Reform (Reforma Rural Integral – RRI). That opened the possibility of rebuilding the regions most affected by the conflict, based on environmental sustainability and social and economic inclusion. This is where AmPaz comes in.
To contribute to the construction of a socially, economically and environmentally sustainable peace, the project AmPaz (Ambiente y Paz as in Environment and Peace in Spanish) is implemented from January 2018 to December 2020. It is commissioned by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and its Colombian partners
AmPaz is divided into four fields of activity:
Territorial Planning
Coherence between planning processes and their implementation on the local level
Green Business Models
Development of needs- and market-oriented approaches for the sustainable use of forest resources and biodiversity in post-conflict regions.
Green Financing
Development of financing models with promising approaches to sustainable natural resource management.
Capacity Building
To strengthen the capacities of key actors in the context of Territory-Environment-Peace
